Why Doesn't Good Works Count for Anything?
« on: November 07, 2019, 12:08:48 PM »

I hear people say good works don't count, but no one explains why. Why does good works not count for anything in Christianity? Some say it does and I tend to agree with them, but why do Reformed Christians deny that? On what basis?

Also,

“Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself” (James 2:17).

Thanks.

Who says it doesn't count for anything? Some Christian doesn't count. The scripture you gave counts. Calvinists are just people with an opinion.

Grace is one thing, but you can't be saved with no works. It's not a conflict as you think it is.

Indeed it is. If it's by works, it cannot be grace. That's not disputable as far as the bible is concerned.

Romans 11:6
"And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it is of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work."

This biblical fact is of vital importance because it makes clear that we can be saved by either one or the other, but not in any way by both. If it's by works, it cannot be by grace.

Why does good works not count for anything in Christianity?

Because your good works are as filthy rags to a perfect God.

Isaiah 64:6
"But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away."

Literally, our righteousness is as unclean as a  menstruous rag. So how could that count for anything but uncleanness and ultimately death.

Quote
but why do Reformed Christians deny that? On what basis?

We deny our good works are counted good or righteous on a biblical basis, and this Biblical mentality based on the sovereignty of God is why we are in the reformed tradition of the doctrines of grace, depending upon divine righteousness where we are honest about ourselves, and lawful in our beliefs.

We're not. We're saved by the work of Christ, not our own. His work of faith.

John 4:34
"Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work."

Gal 2:20,21
20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.
