External Disk Drive won't work
« on: March 10, 2018, 11:24:51 AM »

I have a external USB disk drive, Seagate Backup Plus Slim 1 Terabyte capacity, and I have all my important papers on it. The problem is that one day when I clicked the button to safely remove hard disk, it wouldn't work. So I just unplugged the drive from my computer. I had done this before with no problem. The problem is that this time when I plugged the drive in the next day, it wouldn't work. I receive the message:

"You need to format the disk in drive before you can use it"

I have asked all over and am told it is corrupted, maybe the file system. I searched the internet and heard everything from running a free recovery program, running virus software, using a differenrt USB port to testing the device on another computer. None of this worked. So as you can guess, I'm at a loss. My next step is to send it off to drive specialists who say they can recover my data but it will cost $300.00. Before I do that, is there anything that you guys know that might get this working without shipping it to specialists. Thanks in advance.

The port solution you tried was incomplete. It's not only using a different port. I had this problem with one of my portable drives last year. As I understand it, when you plug in your Hard Drive for the first time, Windows install it on that port. In other words, it is now associated only with the original USB port number. So if you want to use the drive again, you have to plug it into the same post where it was originally installed. So I would suggest that you try plugging it into another port.

You might try the "Find & Mount tool" as some people claim that works well in situations like this. The partition Find & Mount software is supposed to find lost or deleted partitions but it might not work if the file system is severely damaged.

Chris, I tried all ports. Besides, I've plugged this drive into all 4 ports at times and they all worked. The driver auto loads when it is plugged in. This doesn't work.

I've tried all sorts of recovery software. None worked. Still the same message.

Davis,
Try this. If you are using Windows, the first thing you should try is chkdsk. Have you already tried the chkdsk method of data recovery? It should work if there is no physical damage to the disk (hardware) and it's just data corruption. Using this method, none of your data will be lost, it will simply repair your system files. If you haven't yet tried this, instruction is below.

To institute this, press the widows key and the R key simultaneously and the command prompt dialog box (Run) should appear. Type cmd in it and press OK. Next the DOS box will appear. Type in chkdsk, your hard disk letter and colon, and /f. (example: chkdsk G: /f). Then press Enter key. Don't touch anything until the program is 100% completed. If after it finished it says "an unexpected error occurred," do the same thing all over again. This time it will be quicker and all corruption should be repaired.

Next time that problem occurrs, it would be better to shut your computer down before unplugging the USB.

Chris beat me to it. The chkdsk advise should work. Been there, done that. I got rid of all my DVDs and put them all on that same drive. No more clutter with a hundred dvds. All fits on this 1 T drive. Great space saver. And they're so cheap now.

Just noticed I never answered this. I use Chromecast's free videostream Herman. But you can also put it on a USB stick (flash drive) and plug it directly into most modern TVs or bluray players.
