"Have it your way" Church!
« on: September 01, 2006, 11:42:10 AM »
I received this newsletter in mail from one of former churches. I was stunned to read what pastor wrote. Here you go:

Quote
"Have it your way...."

Remember when one of the fast food restaurants used to advertise that you could "have it your way" when you ate with them? It didn't matter what you wanted... pickle, no pickle, tomatoes with onions, ot tomato without onions, cheese, lettuce...whatever you wanted, your hamburger would be made 'your way'.  A lot of people chose to eat there for that very reason.  Why not? Who doesn't want to go somewhere where you get 'your way'?

The problem is that we don't limit our insistence on personal preference to the fast food places where we eat.  We want it 'our way' wherever we are!

I can't promise that Greeley Wesleyan Church will be like a fast food restaurant where you are able to find everything you want..just the way you want.  But in all honesty, maybe not everything we 'want' is everything we 'need'.

I pray that as you go through pages of our fall CONNECT (newsletter), you are able to find people, places, and things that God would use to make you what He wants you to be.  After all, what matters most is that our lives our lived "His way"!

What do you think is wrong with the above message? What would be a good scripture verse against this kind of thinking?

Thanks,
Erik
"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts." (Isaiah 55:8-9)

John 14:6
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

2 Corinthians 6:14-17 (King James Version)

14Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

15And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?

16And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols[/font]? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

17Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.

I don't know.  Maybe I'm daft, but I don't see commercialism, but warning against it.  What am I missing here???  The Pastor says you probably won't find everything you want, exactly as you want it in this particular church, and then encourages the reader to look for ways to live our lives that are not our way, but His.  So, what's wrong with this message???

Please enlighten me!

Blessings,
Sandy

What I think is wrong with it is that it seems to teach that we can somewhat conform our Churches to suit our own personal tastes rather than conform to delivered doctrines. In other words, have your cake, but put some ice cream on it or add some strawberries or take away some of the milk. He seems to hold that we can have it any way we want it. And that is a dangerous message.

Mal 3:6 For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

And neither should we change our God or his Church to make them more compatible or more acceptable to modern society.
"And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins." -Matthew 1:21

Hello Pilgrim,

You said:  "What I think is wrong with it is that it seems to teach that we can somewhat conform our Churches to suit our own personal tastes rather than conform to delivered doctrines.  Mal 3:6 For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

Like I said perhaps I am altogether daft, but where do you find this saying "we can somewhat conform our churches to suit our own personal tastes rather than conform to delivered doctrines?"  How is telling your congregation you probably won't be able to find everything you want, exactly the way you want it in this church, and then telling them what matters most is that we live our lives "His way," conforming the church to suit our own personal tastes rather than conform to delivered doctrines???

I don't know anything about this church or this pastor, but I do not see how this short message can be turned into some attack as though this pastor had committed some unpardonable sin.  But that's just my opinion, and like I said maybe I'm just not getting it.

Blessings,
Sandy

Clearly it's a matter of perception, however I perceive it exactly like Sandy!

Elect Lady, Sandy,

I see it like the both of you.  While the message may be badly worded, it sounds like this pastor is saying that you may not find that everything is to your liking at this church, but if not, it may be because you're not living according to God's will.

As I said, maybe I would word it differently, but I find nothing to disagree with in the message.

Thank you guys. It is interesting on how people response to message that pastor wrote.  His church is based on free-will gospel and pre-millennialism.

Erik,

I think the thing that bothers me most about this news letter, is that the Pastor is using worldy methods to reach the lost.  Even though he does say that we should do it "God's way", he is still using food commercials to get the point across.

I have had this experience in both of my former churches.  One wanted to have skateboarding, ...VBS ..using whatever methods they could to get people INTO the church.  The other church, the one I just came out of, used the movie "Passion of Christ".  Now how on earth can any pastor use this movie, if it is not based on the truth to bring people in.  Beats me!  I was quite upset by that.  How are you going to tell them, that we used this movie, but really, it doesn't reflect what we "really" believe!

Of course, when I didn't understand things like I do now, I used to think that whatever anyone "could do" to bring people in, was OK.  But the Word of God is what touches people's hearts, and not commercials, movies or skateboarding contests.  That only attracts the flesh.

The external church is in BAD shape.

Hi All,

I still believe it is a matter of perception, because this minister made it clear, God's way is best.

Paul said...To the weak became I as weak, that I might GAIN the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means SAVE some. (1 Corinthians 9:22).

Someone might think Paul meant he would do sinful things to SAVE some, especially if they read the other Vss. 1 Corinthians 9:19-22, however if you read to vss. 23- 27, it become clear there are limits, I believe that Pastor also meant there are limits to having it yourway.

Hello All,

I too believe it is a matter of perception.  But I would go a bit farther then Elect Lady.  The perception comes from how one views the covenant body of Christ called church.  If you look at her (church) trying to find all that is wrong in her, (and there is much wrong to be found) then you cannot, will not see anything of value or good in her.  On the other hand if you look at her trying to focus on what is good, or how she can be better then you are more likely to find something of value.  As I, and Elect Lady have said its a matter of perception.

And Goldrush let me reassure you neither am I speaking to myself.  I am NOT Elect Lady!  But I believe she is a person of Godly virtue, and character.  So, if you would like to believe I am she, I will (((perceive))) that it is because you see Godly virtue, and character also, because that's what we find when we look for good, and don't focus on the negative.

Many Blessings,
Sandy
